The Rivers State election tribunal has ordered Senator George Thompson Sekibo, lawmaker representing Rivers east, to vacate the National Assembly.

The three-man panel sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, also declared Andrew Uchendu of the All Progressive Congress, APC, winner of the December 10 rerun election in Rivers-East Senatorial District.

The court also directed the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, that Chief Andrew Uchendu be issued a certificate of return and that of Senator Sekibo withdrawn.

The Tribunal ruled that Sekibo became Senator through the back door, following his non-compliance with the electoral act and INEC guidelines.‎‎

Uchendu had approached the tribunal with a petition asking the court to declare him the winner of the poll, alleging that INEC failed to take into cognisance the results of some wards and polling units before declaring Sekibo the winner of the polls.
