Glo Takes 80% Of New Internet Subscribers As MTN Records Loss

Globacom has strengthened its position as Nigeria’s preferred network for new data subscribers, as the telecommunications company took 80 per cent of the total market share.

This was according to a report by the Nigerian Communications Commission covering the first quarter of 2016.

A total of 1,820,651 new customers subscribed to data services of the four operators – MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat – from January to March 2016, the report indicated.

According to the report, Globacom recorded an additional 1,448,354 new internet subscribers on its network during the period, representing 80 per cent of the total number of new internet subscribers acquired by all the telecommunication networks.

The figure is made up of 354,178 for January, 248,593 for February and 845,583 for the month of March, with the cumulative figure accruing to 26, 530,420 in the first quarter.

The remaining 20 per cent of the new internet subscribers for the quarter was shared by Airtel, which garnered 319,229 new data subscribers, and Etisalat which had an addition of 53,068 new internet users on its network during the period.

However, MTN suffered a huge decline in its internet subscriber figure during the first quarter with over 6.5 million users leaving its network.

The South African based company ended with 33,356,595 after beginning the year with 39,924,737 data customers.

Meanwhile, Globacom as at the end of the fourth quarter of 2015 recorded additional 3.2 million new internet subscribers to its network.
